We had a great start to the Tech Sharing Seminar Series with the first seminar on the 22nd of May, 2017. The day started with a thought provoking talk by Carmelo Velardo (presentation slides here). Carmelo is Senior researcher in Digital Health at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Departmental Lecturer at the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. His recent research aims at the use of mobile-Health solutions to support patients suffering from chronic conditions.

 

 

We then broke into small group discussions to interrogate the key terms of engagement, co-design, evidence, implement and impact/ effectiveness among their multidisciplinary groups comprising computer scientists, health professionals, human-computer interaction researchers, psychologists, people from industry, media, banking and others. Brief presentations were made of the discussions and outcomes from each table before the panel discussion.

 

Panellists included:

Ann Blandford: Ann is Professor of Human-Computer Interaction in the Department of Computer Science at UCL, and a member of UCL Interaction Centre. Her work focuses on technology for health and wellbeing.
Alex Matei: Alex is a Digital Health Manager at Nuffield Health. He has academic background in Software Engineering at University College London, he is now working on embedding machine learning into health prevention and wellbeing services.
Mark Leaning: Mark is a chairman of Helicon Health, a digital health company which aims to support the distributed care those living with long term health conditions through the development of software supported by ongoing education and clinical governance.
Jo Gibbs: Jo is a Senior Clinical Research Associate and Honorary Consultant in Sexual Health & HIV. Her research interests include eSexual Health, health service delivery research and public health. She leads the investigation, design and development of innovative online clinical care pathways from diagnostics to online management.

The panel was facilitated by Henry Potts. Henry is the deputy director of CHIME, UCL’s Centre for Health Informatics & Multiprofessional Education. His current work focuses on m-health and Personal Health Records.
